Getting around

We took the coach to Piazzale Roma. From there, we carried on on foot and by water.

From the airport.

We landed at Treviso. We had budgeted around €160 for a taxi to Piazzale Roma, but chose the coach. ATVO connects the airport to Venice; since August 2026, the advertised journey to Piazzale Roma has been around 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Piazzale Roma is as far as cars can go. Beyond it, remember that you will be carrying your luggage: a short walk on the map can mean quite a few bridges.

More about the works and places

Vaporetto, gondola, water taxi.

The vaporetto is Venice’s public water bus. Line 1 runs along the Grand Canal, making plenty of stops; line 2 is another option, depending on where you are going. If you plan to make several journeys, compare a single ticket with a one-, two- or three-day pass.

In September 2026, an ACTV ticket valid for 75 minutes costs €9.50. Passes cost €25 for 24 hours, €35 for 48 hours and €45 for 72 hours. Validate your ticket every time you board. The coach from Treviso is paid for separately.

We allowed roughly €100 for a gondola ride. The official fare is €90 for 30 minutes during the day and €110 for 35 minutes in the evening, for the whole gondola.

In our notes, a water-taxi tour lasting around 45 minutes was priced at about €150. Ask for the fare and agree on the length of the trip before setting off.
